As late as December 2001, Institute-issued literature was referring to the building that would later scar the west hill of campus as the “Electronic Media and Performing Arts Center”.

Then one day, it became the “Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center”.

As the story goes, Shirley Jackson misspoke at an important event related to EMPAC, saying “experimental” rather than “electronic”, and in true Orwellian fashion, Jackson’s error became the new title.
